“Art is the stored honey of the human soul.” A man named Theodore Dreiser had this realization more than 100 years ago. When I read it the other day, it felt like an undeniable truth.
Bees make and keep honey to grow their colony, nourish their young, and have sustenance for the future. Art can be the same for us. We can learn from art, nourishing our minds and souls. We can find solace and companionship in art. Art can guide us to feel at peace, energized or inspired. Art waits on our walls and in our hearts to help us find happiness or strength when we need it.
To me, taking the time to visit with a piece of art can be a little moment of meditation, giving us mental and soulful nourishment to keep going throughout our day. When we truly look at an artwork, we get a glimpse the time, perhaps the thoughts, and journey that the artist went through to create the piece.
I also find that art feels like honey in my own soul waiting to be brought out, poured onto paper, and then released into the world to hopefully make others happy, just like honey. I hope that my work can be a little jewel of honey in others’ lives; to provide them with a little bit of the nourishing sweetness that is the honey of the human soul.
As you go about your day, I encourage you to take a moment to appreciate the honey that you find around you, whether it be pieces of fine art in your environment, beautiful illustrations in a book or magazine, the music you hear, or the incredible art that nature puts on display. Let these nuggets of honey change you, if only for a moment, and to remind you of the beauty that can be found in our lives and in our souls.

What a beautiful text about art. And the resemblance to honey is so good. Art, just like honey has that potential healing power hasn’t it :)
